Around the world, every six weeks, a devastating fire occurs in large tank plants. But also in the everyday service of the fire brigades, there are many uses in which fuels or liquefying plastics burn.

Such fires present a particular challenge for the emergency personnel and can hardly be controlled with conventional extinguishing foams since they only act where they are applied. For this reason, water film forming foams (Aqueous Film Forming Foam, AFFF or A3F) are used for such liquid fires.
However, the use of these high-performance extinguishing agents, which is indispensable under safety aspects, is very problematic today since all the currently commercially available film-forming extinguishing foams (AFFF) - contain polyfluorinated surfactants which are critical both from an ecological and also from a toxicological point of view.
